A couple of years ago someone from Minnesota was on the radio discussing fish houses, which are peculiar to the far north(here). She said that she had a couple of guests from Europe visiting her in the winter and when they passed a frozen lake and saw the little buildings spread out on the ice they expressed sorrow and sympathy for the poor inhabitants of the winter slums. The narrator laughed an told them that the owners of those ice shanties probably had more money than she did.
Today in the Minneapolis paper they reported that thieves had broken into a dozen fish houses on Lake Minnetonka and stole stereo equipment, flat screen TVs and fishing equipment. Most houses are basic, but some are amazing.
Alex and his friends are working in this year's Art Shanty Project. They are building something like a submarine to put on Medicine Lake. I always meant to go see the project but I didn't because it always seemed to be put on in the coldest week of the year. I'll see it this time, for sure.
